Tony was born in Youngstown, Ohio, is a devoted Episcopal priest with a rich legacy of service. After graduating from DePauw University, he entered Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained. He began his ministry in Cleveland, Ohio, serving inner-city parishes while also earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He then became rector of St. Christopher’s in Carmel, Indiana, growing the congregation and leading major expansions over 24 years. Retirement in 2000 to Afton, Virginia was brief—he served 17 years at Holy Cross in Batesville, and later accepted a call to St. John's in 2019, after also serving in the Virgin Islands in 2018.
Tony and his wife, Emily Lewis, are passionate travelers, hikers, and community volunteers. They cherish their periodic spiritual retreats at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert and find joy in books, music, poetry, and serving others wherever they are called.

She gained significant experience working with church groups in Appalachia through the Tennessee Outreach Program (Mountain T.O.P.), and from theological-practical internships at a branch of Atlanta Legal

She gained significant experience working with church groups in Appalachia through the Tennessee Outreach Program (Mountain T.O.P.), and from theological-practical internships at a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid and the Carter Center. She pastored churches in southern Maryland before turning to full-time academic pursuits.
Heather was born in Scotland, grew up mostly in Nashville, Tennessee, and received her formal education at Cornell, Emory, Oxford, and Johns Hopkins. Since 1998, she has been a tenured faculty member in UVA’s Department of Religious Studies where she researches and teaches American religious history, particularly American Protestantism since the late-nineteenth century. She has a daughter Hannah Burgess, who is a professional mermaid, and a son, Benedict Burgess, who is an actor and a writer. She is also an avid hiker and maintains a section of the Appalachian Trail.

Throughout his career, Carlton has served as Minister of Music in multiple denominations, sharing his talents with diverse congregations, and coming to St. John's in ___. When not engaged in church activities, he dedicates time to teaching and working at his home, Stockdale, in Phenix, VA.
